Recommend Steps to Become a MRI Technician

1. Students considering how to become an MRI technician should start by taking courses as early as high school to prepare themselves for the field. Such courses include biology, physics, physiology, anatomy, and chemistry.
2. The next step to become a MRI technician is to obtain either a bachelor’s or associate’s degree in Allied Health Sciences or radiology technology. Most associate programs provide coursework and clinical work in physics, radiation, anatomy, and patient care policies.
3. Graduates from an Allied Health Sciences  or radiology technology degree program must also complete a certification program that provides one to two years of specific training in MRI technology and procedures. If you have a lot of experience in health care already you may be able to become an MRI technician by only completing a certification program and not have to get an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Allied Health Sciences or radiology technology.
4. In forty of the fifty States MRI technicians have to be licensed before practicing as medical radiographers. Though the license requirements vary by state, several of the state licensing processes involve passing a written exam.
5. Obtaining certification as a radiologic technologist is not required but many hospitals and employers prefer to hire only certified MRI technicians. Becoming certified with the American Registry of Radiologic Technicians typically involves passing an exam and completing continuing education requirements every couple of years.
