The skeleton system is an amazing piece of work. Each of the 206 bones within the adult human body have a specific purpose to support, protect and move the body every which way. Considering the amount of accidents and strenuous activities we endure over a lifetime, it’s no wonder why so many bones get broken. Broken bones may be common, but not all of them will be treated with a bright colored cast. Depending on the severity of the fracture, there are certain bones that can heal well without a cast, and here are 8 of them:

• Toes
  A broken toe usually occurs when something is dropped on your foot or you stub your toe. Fractured toes don’t usually need a cast to heal because they can be immobilized by buddy wrapping it, or bandaging the broken toe with a healthy one. Broken toes can take anywhere from four to six weeks to heal.
• Fingers
  Depending on the particular bone and type of fracture, broken fingers are usually treated with buddy wrapping, by bandaging the broken finger next to a healthy one. This method of immobilization usually takes about four to six weeks to heal. A splint may be applied to align the fracture fragments.
• Ribs
  Broken ribs can be a bit trickier than other broken bones because of their closeness to internal organs and threat of pneumonia. Thankfully, most broken ribs are only cracked and can heal on their own in six to eight weeks.
• Collarbone
  A broken collarbone is often treated with little more than an arm sling, medication and physical therapy. Depending on the severity of the injury, it could take anywhere from six to 12 weeks for the collarbone to heal, but movement should be restricted during this time.
• Skull
  Many fractured noggins can heal without a cast because the bone surrounding the brain naturally heals on its own. For example, a linear skull fracture is a break in the cranial bone that looks like a thin line but does not splinter, depress or distort the bone. Because linear skull fractures occur without damaging the brain, there is no treatment required.
• Nose
  Talk to hockey and football players – a broken nose, also called a nasal fracture, can heal without a cast by being realigned. With the help of your doctor, the broken bones and cartilage in your nose can be manually realigned by a procedure called closed reduction, which is done no more than 14 days after the incident.
• Tailbone
  A broken tailbone, or fractured coccyx, is a slow healing and often painful injury. The good thing is broken tailbones can heal without a cast. Because it’s such a painful injury, pain management is very important during the recovery stage, and certain measures should be taken to avoid placing pressure on the tailbone.
• Pelvis
  A broken pelvis can heal without a cast and surgery, but it depends on the severity of the fracture. Stable fractures of the pelvis can heal without a cast and surgery, but patients will likely have to use crutches or a walker and can’t put all of their weight on one or both legs for nearly three months. Despite limited mobility, stable pelvic fractures generally heal well in a three or more months.

As you get older, you might suffer a fracture while performing normal day-to-day activities. Often times, adults break their arms, legs and collarbones in car accidents or accidents within their households. • Arm

• Finger

• Leg
  A broken leg entails a broken femur, tibia, fibula or patella. Because the bones are so strong, it usually takes quite a bit of force to break them – like a large fall or a major car accident. An open fracture may occur during a serious injury. This is when the bone breaks the skin and becomes viewable.
• Nose
  A broken nose is the least attractive break you can suffer. Noses that have been broken multiple times can lose their form, becoming asymmetrical and unrecognizable to their owners. Typically, the injury occurs as a result of fights, contact during sports games and car accidents (of course).
• Jaw
  The second most common broken facial bone after a broken nose is a broken jaw. It’s much more common among men than women – three times as many suffer the injury, and it occurs most among men aged 20-29, emedicinehealth.com asserts. Also known as a mandibular fracture, it’s caused by direct trauma.

It’s a pleasure to watch a skilled athlete dominate his sport. When Michael Jordan was at the top of his game during the ’90s, the NBA experienced all-time highs in television ratings and merchandise sales. People who previously didn’t care about the NBA tuned in to watch MJ duel against other stars like Magic, Ewing, Barkley, Stockton and Malone. Children emulated his iconic one-handed open legs dunk and later his fade-away jumper. But what if Jordan’s broken left foot – which caused him to miss 64 games during the 1985-86 season – never quite healed right and he never became the great player we all knew and loved? Certainly basketball wouldn’t be the same.

On the other hand, what if players like Grant Hill and Penny Hardaway never had to endure career-altering injuries? Perhaps they would be mentioned in the pantheon of all-time greats. Perhaps they would have transcended basketball. Injuries are a reality in professional sports and many gifted athletes have fallen short of their career’s full potential because of brittle bones, weak tendons and bad luck. Below is a list of players from the last few decades who were extraordinarily gifted, but their bodies – and fate – disallowed them to reach the statistical and team milestones they were capable of achieving. Some are Hall of Famers and some are not. But all still have kept us wondering: “what could have been?”

1. Bo Jackson

   Jackson was one of the rare modern athletes who managed to excel in two major professional sports, but he was most heralded for his ability to carry the pigskin. His size and speed on combination is unparalleled historically. Even at 6′1″and 227 pounds, he was still one of the fastest players in sports; his 4.12 40-yard dash in the Louisiana Superdome in 1986 made NFL scouts drool. His production reflected his ability. He average 5.4 yards per carry during his brief career with the LA Raiders, which was ended in 1991 when he suffered a severe hip injury during a playoff game.

2. Ken Griffey Jr.

   “The Kid” was arguably the best player in baseball during the ’90s. He was an exceptional defensive and offensive talent. His trophy case is filled with Gold Glove Awards, an All-Star Game MVP trophy and an AL MVP trophy. He has more than 600 career homeruns, and his swing remains silky-smooth today. But his accomplishments could’ve been even greater. His health problems started with hamstring and knee injuries during the early 2000s with the Reds, and he went on to miss hundreds of games. The decade hindered him from becoming the greatest baseball player ever and the career homerun leader that many expected.

3. Grant Hill

   The 2000s were also cruel to Hill, who entered the NBA in the mid-’90s as the league’s most exciting young superstar. As a rookie, he led the league in All-Star votes, and during his second year, he received more votes than Michael Jordan. The 6′8″ forward was an excellent scorer, rebounder and passer – only his injuries could stop him. During the 2000 playoffs, he played on a sprained ankle, which eventually caused him to play just four games in his first season alongside Tracy McGrady with the Magic in 2000-01. He wouldn’t play more than 30 games until 2004-05 or a full season until 2008-09.

4. Penny Hardaway

   Penny was the other amazingly talented player who burst onto the NBA scene during the mid-’90s but failed to meet fans’ expectations because of injuries. The 6′8″ point guard was compared to Magic Johnson; he could fill the stat sheet and look pretty doing it. The Penny/Shaq Magic were supposed to be the NBA’s next great dynasty. But Shaq left for LA in 1996 and Penny injured his left knee in 1997-98. His athleticism was never the same. He played for the Suns, Knicks and Heat before retiring in 2008.

5. Terrell Davis

   In April of ‘95 when Davis was selected in the sixth round of the NFL Draft, nobody expected him to eventually win a regular season MVP and a Super Bowl MVP. His ascendancy as one the elite running backs was brief, but he stuck around long enough to assist John Elway win two championships. In 1999, Davis tore his ACL and MCL, causing him to play just 17 games over three seasons. He retired in 2002 was the Broncos all-time leading rusher.

6. Bill Walton

   Because of his great career at UCLA, Walton seemed like a sure thing during the 1974 draft when the Blazers selected him first overall. And when he actually played, he was one of the elite big men in the NBA history. He was the catalyst of the Blazers run to the championship in 1977 when he won Finals MVP. But Walton’s injury problems were all-time bad. He missed two full seasons after fracturing his foot early in the 1979-80 season. He played more than 65 games just three times during his ten season career.

7. JR Richard

   The consequences of Richard’s health problems were far greater than just lost acclaim. His downfall was made famous during the ’90s when he was spotted living under a Houston freeway overpass. His bad luck began when he suffered a major stroke prior to game in 1980 – a season in which he had a 1.90 ERA and 119 strikeouts in 113.2 innings. Although he was one of the best pitchers of the late ’70s, his improvement continued. If he had remained healthy, a Richard and Nolan Ryan duo would’ve been tough to beat in the postseason.

8. Ralph Sampson

   Sampson was another Houston professional athlete who couldn’t escape the cloud of bad luck that perpetually looms over the city’s sports teams. But before his knee and back injuries, he was the only 7′4″ player who could move and handle the ball like a guard. When he teamed with Hakeem (then known as Akeem) Olajuwon to form the “Twin Towers,” the Rockets seemed like an emerging dynasty. His series-clinching shot that eliminated the Lakers in the ‘86 Western Conference Finals is regarded as one of the great moments in NBA history.

9. Bernard King

   King was one of the great scorers in NBA history, averaging 22.5 points per game during his career and shooting just under 52 percent from the field. He was famous for his ferocious 50 point outbursts, and he’s one of the handful of players to score 60 in a game. In 1985, he tore his ACL, and missed the entire 1985-86 season as a result. His prime-years were stolen from him, though he did manage to rebound and make the All-Star team in 1991.

10. Eric Davis

    Davis possessed a combination of power and speed comparable to Mays and Bonds. His best season came in 1987, when he hit .293 and tallied 37 homeruns, 100 RBIs, 120 runs and 50 stolen bases in 129 games. From ‘86 to ‘90, he had more than 20 homeruns and 20 stolen bases in each season. But Davis never played more than 135 games. His career began to slide after 1990, when he lacerated his kidney during the World Series and underwent offseason knee surgery.

I don’t have a lot to add to most of these photos, because they’re crazy enough to speak for themselves. But by way of introduction, you should know that most of them are pretty graphic and include links to news stories and other photos that might put you off your lunch. If nothing else, though, you’ll learn to be careful around arrows, keys, bullets, and just about everything in your house that isn’t your bed.

1. An 11-year-old boy was shot through the eye with an arrow. It was only stopped by the back of his skull.

3. A woman in the Netherlands swallowed 78 pieces of cutlery.

4. The worst drinking problem I’ve ever seen.

5. A dog swallowed a rubber duck after using it as a chew toy and fighting with another dog over it.

6. A 12-foot Burmese python got a little too hungry and ingested an electric blanket, complete with cord and control box.

7. Thank goodness the guy didn’t use his body for this one: A smuggler traveling from Sydney to Bangkok was caught trying to sneak 44 snakes and lizards out of Australia.

8. A Florida man was stabbed in the head by an unknown assailant in 2007, resulting in a gruesome image that doesn’t even look real. But Michael Hill survived the ordeal, and is currently the Guiness World Record holder in the category “Largest Object Removed From Human Skull.”

9. Toddler Nicholas Holderman suffered a horrible accident when he fell on a set of car keys. Despite puncturing his brain, he was able to receive surgery and make a full recovery.

10. A construction worker in Los Angeles fell from a roof while using a nail gun, sending several metal bolts directly into his skull.

11. An Indiana girl swallowed a bunch of toy magnets and steel balls, which needed to be surgically removed.

12. This image came from a Saint Bernard that accidentally swallowed a knife. Though no doubt a painful experience, the pooch pulled through and survived just fine with surgery.

13. Prison guard Louis Pepe was stabbed with a comb by an imprisoned al-Qaida operative in 2000, a wound that left him with limited mobility and speech.

14. Pat Skinner was left with a pair of surgical scissors still inside her after a procedure to remove her colon.

15. This is Lance Armstong’s collarbone, which he broke in 2009 and was subsequently repaired through the copious use of screws.

16. A man diving and fishing off the Brazilian coast fired a spear that ricocheted and landed in his own head. It took five hours of surgery for doctors to extract the bolt.

17. An elderly Colorado man coughed up a nail that doctors estimated had been in his sinus cavity for 30 years. How he never knew about it is a whole other mystery.

18. A man in China was unwisely using a small pair of scissors as an after-meal toothpick when he laughed at a friend’s joke and wound up swallowing the tiny blades.

19. Attacked outside a Melbourne night club, this young man wound up with a chair leg embedded in his eye and neck.

20. A retired Kansas man sustained an accidental injury when a friend shot a nail into his head during a home construction project.

21. Chinese woman Luo Cuifen wound up with 23 needles in her body, likely placed there when she was infant by grandparents hoping to kill the child and let a boy take her place.

22. A New Zealand man got into a brawl that left him with a knife blade stuck in his brain. Thankfully, surgeons were able to remove the metal and save the man’s life.

23. This image shocked even me: California construction worker Ron Hunt took a tumble and landed on the drill he was using, sending the 18-inch drillbit completely through his skull. Miraculously, the bit didn’t impale his brain, merely “nudged” it, limiting the nerve damage.

24. Firefighter Matt Long’s injuries looked bad: He was crushed by a Bear Stearns charter bus that made an illegal right turn in December 2005. He wasn’t even expected to walk again. But in 2008, he ran the New York City Marathon.

25. Construction injuries are common fodder for outlandish X-rays, including this one of worker Jed Durant, injured by a stray nail.

26. A teenage boy in London was attacked during an attempted mugging and stabbed with a knife that plunged several inches into his head. He was able to survive, and the attacker was arrested and convicted of attempted murder.

27. A young man in Colorado was struck in the head by a metal pin from a garden tiller. Surprisingly, a trip to the ER didn’t show the pin, and it went undetected for the first 48 hours after the accident.

28. Patrick Lawler thought he had a toothache, but the truth was much worse: He’d been hit with a ricochet nail from a gun that had shot through his mouth and into his skull with such force and speed he hadn’t even noticed.

29. Romanticism went awry when a New Mexico man hid a diamond engagement ring in his girlfriend’s milkshake and she swallowed it without knowing. It took some extra helpings of fiber to get the ring back, which the couple then (hopefully) cleaned thoroughly before going through with the proposal.

30. A German woman lived most of her life with a section of pencil stuck in her head, finally getting it surgically removed after 55 years.

You’d be amazed what some people have in their bodies. These bizarre but true stories cover everything from foreign bodies to biological to specimens to more than one piece of cutlery. Some are funny, while others are a bit grosser, but it’s a good idea to make sure you’re not eating as you dig into the list of creepy things found inside people’s bodies:

1. A plastic piece of fork was found in a man’s lung in North Carolina. The chunk of cheap cutlery still bore the Wendy’s logo from the trip the man had taken to the fast food establishment and during which he’d apparently eaten so quickly that he didn’t feel (or ignored?) the feeling of a shard of plastic sliding down his gullet. Two years of lung pain later, the fork was removed.

2. An Indian man lived his whole life with a big belly, but sudden pain atage 36 sent him rushing to the hospital, where the doctors opened him up to find a human fetus. It was the mutated body of the man’s twin, which he’d absorbed before birth but which had continued to dwell in his body. It’s a condition known as “fetus in fetu,” which I will let you Google on your lunch break at your peril.

3. Surgical instruments have been left behind in patients on many occasions, but even so, it was a shock for one Pittsburgh man wound up with a 10-inch retractor lodged in his abdomen. Even more worrisome: When the man complained of pains, doctors told him to see a psychiatrist instead of checking their pockets for missing tools.

4. A 10-pound ball of hair was found inside an 18-year-old woman’s stomach, a mass that had caused her to suffer drastic weight loss and vomiting after eating. The cause of the mass was the woman’s own bad habits: She had a habit of chewing on and eating her hair, which gradually accumulated in her gut.

5. A death row inmate in Amarillo was among a group of convicts found in November 2008 to be in possession of contraband cell phones. The inmate’s chosen hiding spot? His rectum. The phone was found thanks to an X-ray scan.

6. In 2008, surgeons in Bangladesh removed a tumor from a 35-year-old man’s abdomen that weighed — wait for it — 95 pounds. The growth was the size of four watermelons and had been growing for at least four years, and had “huge” blood vessels attached.

7. A Japanese man checked into the hospital complaining of stomach pain, and surgeons thought they’d found a tumor in the man’s abdomen. Wrong: It was a surgical towel that had been left inside the man 25 years earlier when he underwent surgery for a minor ulcer. He’d had the cloth inside his body for a quarter century.

8. A new species was discovered when a fanged leech was pulled from the nose of a young girl who was bathing in a river in Peru. Only two inches long, the leech sports a set of large teeth and caused scientists to revise their understanding of the leech family.

9. A Czech woman wound up with a foot-long medical tool in her abdomen that doctors forgot to remove after performing gynecological surgery. Unsurprisingly, she plans to sue.

10. A living worm — like, an actual, living, writhing worm — was found inside her brain. After experiencing swelling and numbness, the woman had an MRI that revealed what looked like a foreign growth on her brain stem, but it turned out to be a tapeworm. The stomach-churning experience came about when the woman at some point ate food that had been tainted with the fecal residue of someone infected with that kind of tapeworm parasite. 13. More than 30 years ago, a Dutch woman went to the hospital complaining of a stomachache, and that’s when doctors found 78 pieces of cutlery inside her. The woman suffered from a personality disorder that caused her to ignore her food at mealtime and instead go right for the silver, though for some reason, she only at the forks and spoons, never the knives. The most obvious line of the entire story: “Doctors in Rotterdam said they had never heard of someone consuming quite so many foreign objects before.” I’d hope not.

14-16. An MSNBC report found that a trio of midwestern women had suffered particularly painful episodes after physical object were left behind in their bodies after various surgeries. One woman had knee surgery but still felt pain: The doctor had left a 2-inch scalpel blade in her leg. Another woman had a breast biopsy but dealt with pain for eight more years: A new mammogram revealed that a broken needle was embedded in her breast. And a third woman was the victim of faulty construction when a metallic blood-clot filter shifted inside her, punctured a vein, and took multiple procedures to successfully remove.

17. Thirty magnets and steel balls were found inside an 8-year-old Indiana girl after she said they “looked like candy” and wolfed them down. (Even if they look like candy, did they taste like it?) The collection of metal led to holes that resembled stab wounds or gunshots in her intestines, requiring surgery.

18. A set of false teeth were found in a woman’s stomach when she complained of pains. Although initially reluctant to divulge how they got there, she eventually admitted she had swallowed her boyfriend’s dentures while experimenting with “a special type of passionate kiss.” No idea what that would even look like, or how hard you’d have to suck to get dentures to pop off, but kudos for trying new things.

19. How’s this for creepy: An Israeli woman swallowed a cockroach as well as the fork she used to try and get it out. The big flew into her mouth as she was cleaning house, and in a panic, she tried to scoop the insect out with a fork but wound up swallowing that, as well. Surgery got the fork out, but the bug had already been digested.

20. An Ethiopian man had 222 metallic objects in his stomach. Two hundred and twenty-two. The collection included nails, door keys, watch batteries, and hair pins. The cause of the weird eating was likely mental illness. Surgeons were able to remove the almost 1.7 pounds of metal from the man’s abdomen.

There are so many health viruses that affect people around the world. These viruses can cause something as common as the cold and flu or something serious like dengue and malaria. Everyone is vulnerable to these viruses, so we need to gather all the tips that can to help fight them. 3. http://science4u-dangerviruses.blogspot.com/ – Science for You has information about different viruses like Hepatitis, AIDS, and swine flu. The blog gives us precautions and vaccination tips to prevent us from having the diseases.
4. http://www.webmd.com/ – Our world is full of diseases caused by viruses and other unpreventable factors. Web MD is here to give us better information and better health through the site they made for us.
5. http://hygimia69.blogspot.com/ – the goal of this blog is in tracking all information about the pandemics that haunt our world. It teaches us how to plan and prepare for the diseases so we can avoid them.
6. http://hmnews.org/ – Health and Medicine News literally has all the latest news. Every 30 minutes or so, the site automatically gets the stories from their sources. That way, readers such as us will know what viruses should be taken seriously at the moment.
7. http://nation-health.blogspot.com/ – Nation Health tackles the health issues that disturb us, especially the viruses that can kill the people. But aside from that, it also has topics such as obesity, smoking, and diets among others.
8. http://www.birdflumonitor.com/ – The swine flu is still developing into worse things. Bird Flu Monitor makes sure that we are given up to date information so we won’t be left behind on the deadly virus.
9. http://tuftscope.blogspot.com/ – Tuft Scope, the interdisciplinary journal of health, ethics, and policies, is there to ensure that people aren’t fooled into thinking anything besides the truth. This blog gives analysis on data, and more importantly, tells us about the viruses that are very widespread to us.
